fun hoverboard activity for kids

Once your child has mastered the basics of riding, a hoverboard becomes so much more than just a way to get around the backyard. it can be the star of hours of active, screen-free fun. Here are five games and activities that will keep the kids entertained (and burning off energy) on their hoverboard.

Safety first: All activities below should be done with proper safety gear (helmet, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads), on a flat, obstacle-free surface, and with adult supervision, especially for younger or newer riders.

1. Hoverboard Obstacle Course

Set up a simple obstacle course in the driveway, backyard, or local park using items you probably already have at home:

  • Witches hats or empty cups to weave around
  • A chalk-drawn “balance line” to ride along
  • Hula hoops laid flat to ride through
  • A cardboard box “tunnel” to glide past (not through!)

Time each run with a stopwatch and let kids try to beat their own best time. It’s a brilliant way to build confidence, control, and steering skills.

2. Red Light, Green Light (Hoverboard Edition)

This playground classic gets a fun twist on wheels. One person is the “caller” and shouts:

  • “Green light!” – riders move forward
  • “Yellow light!” – riders slow down
  • “Red light!” – riders must stop completely

Anyone who moves after “red light” goes back to the start. It’s a fantastic way for kids to practice quick stops and speed control in a low-pressure, giggle-filled game.

3. Hoverboard Follow the Leader

A great activity for siblings or a group of friends. One rider takes the lead and performs simple moves – slow circles, figure eights, gentle zig-zags, spins (for confident riders) –Β  while everyone else tries to copy exactly. Rotate the leader every few minutes so everyone gets a turn showing off their best moves.

4. Balloon Pop Race

Tie a balloon to a string on the back of each rider’s belt or wrist guard, then set them loose in a designated area. Riders try to pop each other’s balloons (gently bumping or tapping, no crashing!) while protecting their own. Last balloon standing wins. This one’s high-energy, so make sure the space is open and clear.

5. Hoverboard Scavenger Hunt

Hide small items or clue cards around the yard or park and send the kids off on their hoverboards to find them. You can theme it around a treasure hunt, a colour hunt, or even tie it into a birthday party. It keeps riders moving, thinking, and having fun all at once, perfect for a hoverboard-themed birthday party.

Make It Even More Fun

Pair these games with a matching pair of hoverboards so friends or siblings can play together, or look into hoverboard accessories like coloured LED lights and Bluetooth speakers to make every activity feel like an event.
