If you’ve just bought a hoverboard, or you’re still deciding, there’s a good chance you’ve already typed “how long does a hoverboard battery last” into Google at some point. Fair enough – nobody wants to charge something for hours only to have it die halfway down the street.
So let’s cut through the marketing fluff and talk about what you can actually expect from a 6.5 inch hoverboard, how long it takes to charge, and a few things that’ll help the battery last longer than the neighbour’s kid’s board.
The short answer
Most 6.5 inch hoverboards, ours included, will give you somewhere between 1 and 1.5 hours of riding time on a full charge, which usually works out to about 15-20km. Charging from flat takes roughly 2-3 hours.
That’s the number you’ll see quoted everywhere, and it’s a reasonable one, but like most “up to” figures, it comes with some fine print.
Why your mileage might vary (literally)
Here’s the thing nobody tells you upfront: that 1.5 hours and 20km figure is basically the best-case scenario. A few things chip away at it in real life.
Who’s riding it matters. Hoverboards are rated up to about 100kg, but the motor has to work harder the closer you get to that limit, and harder work means faster battery drain. A lighter rider is simply going to squeeze more distance out of the same charge.
Where you’re riding matters too. Smooth concrete or footpath is easy going for the motors. Grass, gravel, or anything with a slope in it asks a lot more of the battery, so don’t be surprised if range drops noticeably off-road.
How you ride plays a part. Constant starting, stopping, and sharp turns use more power than just cruising along steadily. Nothing wrong with having fun on it,Β just don’t expect the same range if you’re doing figure-eights in the driveway the whole time.
Charging time, properly explained
A full charge from empty is typically 2-3 hours. If you’re in a rush and just need a quick spin, most boards will give you a decent bit of usable charge after 20-30 minutes on the charger.
One thing worth mentioning: the charger usually has a little LED on it – red while it’s charging, green once it’s done. Simple, but it’s easy to forget to check and end up leaving it plugged in way longer than needed, which brings us to…
A few habits that’ll actually extend battery life
Lithium-ion batteries (the same kind in your phone) don’t love being treated carelessly, and a bit of care goes a long way:
- Try not to run it all the way down to zero before charging it again topping up before it’s fully drained is easier on the battery long-term.
- Don’t leave it on the charger overnight once it’s full. It won’t necessarily explode or anything dramatic, but constant overcharging isn’t great for battery lifespan.
- If it’s going into storage for a while (say, over winter), give it a charge every month or two rather than letting it sit completely flat.
- Keep it somewhere reasonably temperature-stable, not baking in a hot garage, not freezing in the shed.
- Only use the charger it came with. It sounds obvious, but mismatched chargers are one of the more common causes of battery problems we hear about.
When it might be time for a new battery
Batteries don’t last forever, and that’s true of hoverboards just like phones or laptops. Keep an eye out for:
- Ride time noticeably shorter than what you started with
- Charging taking a lot longer than the usual 2-3 hours
- Random beeping or cutting out mid-ride
- Any swelling or visible damage to the battery housing (if you see this, stop using it straight away)
None of these mean anything’s wrong with how you’re riding it, batteries just wear out over time, especially with regular use.
